French presidential elections: basic facts

These are the basic facts traders need to know regarding the upcoming French presidential elections. The political and economic agenda of several of the presidential candidates is of such a nature that the election results could have a significant impact on the capital markets.

On Sunday 23 April 2017 French citizens can vote in the first round of the French presidential elections. Currently at least four candidates seem to have a chance of proceeding to the second and final round. The second and final round opposes the two remaining candidates and takes place on Sunday 7 May 2017.

The four candidates with appear to have a chance to conquer one of the two places in the second round are:
Emmauel Macron
Marine Le Pen
Jean-Luc Mélenchon
François Fillon

Voting takes place from 8h00 to either 19h00 or 20h00 (major cities). The first round results will be released on Sunday 23 April at 20h00. The official results have, in the past, been in line with these results published at 20h00. The second round follows the same procedure.

Given the nature of the economic agendas proposed by the candidates, it is not unlikely that the markets will see significant volatility, including market gaps, depending on the results.
